In this article, PFS will spotlight the left guards in the AFC West. Each left guard from the AFC West teams will be evaluated on run and pass blocking assignment grades, dominance scores, and then ranked, according to averaged performances from the 1st four weeks of the season.
One thing to remember when evaluating a lineman across teams so early in the year…each player has met up with different defenders. Later in the season, the comparisons will be more equal as each team has similar teams on their schedule. Also, assignment grades are important, but when looking at linemen across teams, the dominance scores, or power score, is weighted as higher in value. Especially, when assignment grades are within a similar range.
Let’s take a look at those performance rankings…
Left Guard Run Blocking Performance
Best Run Blocking Left Guard In The AFC West (7 games): Kris Dielman.
Kris Dielman didn’t play in the 7th game against the Chiefs, due to a seizure he had after the 6th game of the season. After only missing one game, he is still the best run blocking left tackle in the AFC West.
Best 2nd Level Run Blocker In The AFC West (7 games): Ryan Lilja
The best 2nd level blocker through 7 games has been Ryan Lilja from the Kansas City Chiefs. He has averaged a +3.1 score over those games which tells us he is athletic, quick, and has been able to sustain blocks in space against quick linebackers.
Best Pull Blocker In The AFC West (7 games): Kris Dielman
So far, after 7 games into the regular season, Kris Dielman is the best pull blocking left guard…by far. His score is a full +2.9 points higher than his closest competitor in the AFC West.
Left Guard Pass Blocking Performance
Best Pass Blocking Left Guard In The AFC West (7 games): Kris Dielman.
Through the first seven games, Kris Dielman is the best pass blocking left guard in the AFC West. Kris not only has the highest assignment grade average …he has the best dominance score of any AFC West left guard. In fact, he is the only left guard in the AFC West that has a power score in the positive range. Dielman has surrendered 1.6 pressures, per game, through week #8 of the regular season.
