Broncos vs Bengals Week #2: Breaking Down The TEs and Backs Film

BD Film Broncos copy

The Denver Broncos defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 24-22 this past weekend to move the Broncos in a three way tie for the AFC West lead. The Cincinnati game was a time for Broncos fans to see just how physical their team could be in the running game.

The Bengals, known for their physical style, gave up 131 yards on 36 carries as Denver controlled the game by grinding the ball down the field. With that focus on the run Daniel Fells appeared to have a renewed focus in run blocking.  He ended the day with a 76% assignment score, up from last weeks 55%, and a -3 power score.

Let’s take a look at the rest of those grades…

Run Blocking Stats

Team Run Blocking

Did the lineman get the job done or not? These grades are good for understanding value for a team and not necessarily for comparing across teams. A game in the mid 80s to 90% is a decent score.

Power Blocking

How often did the offensive lineman dominate the block or how often did he get dominated? These scores are good for comparing across teams and finding the most dominant lineman in the league.

PB Score

Anything over zero is a good score. The more over zero the more the lineman dominated the defender. Each lineman is scored a minus for being dominated, a zero for a draw, or a plus for dominating the defender.

Team Run Blocking

The number of success over failures for the lineman when blocking linebackers and safeties on the second level. The lineman must be athletic to accomplish a high second level score.

Run Blocking Notes

  • Daniel Fells improves his assignment grade from 55% last week against the Raiders to 76% this week.  He still has some issues with the defender being physical with him.  But improvement has been made from last week to this one.
  • Spencer Larsen is a good fullback.  He is like a heat seeking missile that just seems to find its target, or any target, and engage.  A fan might think that is something all fullbacks do…but that is not the case.  I have graded a couple of fullbacks that have about a 50-50 chance that they might actually block a defender.  Spencer is aggressive, physical, and knows how to find the target.
  • At 11:33 in the 1st Fells demonstrates a good motor as he locks onto a defender at the 2nd level.
  • Virgil Green has a good drive on the 2nd level also at 11:33 in the 1st quarter.
  • Larsen had a lot of good blocks but at 14:42 in the 2nd quarter the linebacker met him in the hole.  There was a big collision and Larsen was driven back.
  • I really like the energy of Daniel Fells at 12:18 in the 3rd quarter.  Need to see that every play.
  • Spencer has a great run block on a defensive tackle at 10:39 in the 4th quarter.  Drives the defender back a couple of feet.  Nice!

Pass Blocking Stats

Team % Blocking

Did the lineman get the job done or not? These grades are good for understanding value for a team and not necessarily for comparing across teams. A game in the 90% is a good score for pass blocking.

Power Blocking

How often did the offensive lineman dominate the block or how often did he get dominated? Each lineman is scored a minus for being dominated, a zero for a draw, or a plus for dominating the block.

Pressures

How often did the offensive lineman give up pressure on the quarterback? Every once and a while a lineman can do his job but give up pressure on the QB. This stat will help glean more info from the line grades.

Combo Help

How often did the offensive coordinator provide help for a tough defender or a struggling lineman. Yea, two lineman ended up with the same grade, but how much help did either of them get?

Pass Blocking Notes

  • Daniel Fells has a good day pass blocking.
  • For the second week in a row Willis McGahee demonstrates his pass blocking skills.
  • At 7:18 in the 1st quarter Daniel Fells has a poor effort on a pass block.
  • Spencer Larsen has a good cut block in pass protection at :39 in the 3rd quarter.
  • As a whole the tight ends and running backs did a good job blocking this week.  Nice improvement by the tight ends in run blocking.
