The San Diego Chargers get their second win of the season as they beat the Kansas City Chiefs 20-17. With Antonio Gates out, Randy McMichael was a bigger part of the passing game, and less of a factor blocking. This week, the Chargers counted on their lineman and some backs to help protect Philip Rivers. A change from the past few weeks where McMichael was frequently called on to help with pass protection. This week, Jacob Hester has a rough game as he produces a 50% on the assignments grade. Let’s take a look at the rest of those scores…
Run Blocking Stats
Team Run Blocking
Did the lineman get the job done or not? These grades are good for understanding value for a team and not necessarily for comparing across teams. A game in the mid 80s to 90% is a decent score.
Power Blocking
How often did the offensive lineman dominate the block or how often did he get dominated? These scores are good for comparing across teams and finding the most dominant lineman in the league.
PB Score
Anything over zero is a good score. The more over zero the more the lineman dominated the defender. Each lineman is scored a minus for being dominated, a zero for a draw, or a plus for dominating the defender.
Team Run Blocking
The number of success over failures for the lineman when blocking linebackers and safeties on the second level. The lineman must be athletic to accomplish a high second level score.

Run Blocking Notes
- Hester has an off day. Only 50% on assignment grade this week.
- At 10:20 in the 1st quarter, Jacob Hester misses a lead block on Tamba Hali on the outside.
- Randy McMichael has done a little better each week on his run blocking. This week, he ends the day with a 94% on his assignments grade. He is doing better and holds blocks longer, most of the time, like the one at 4:47 in the 1st quarter against Tamba Hali.
- McMichael does have a poor effort on a run block at 2:00 in the 2nd quarter and at 1:29 in short yardage.
- McMichael has a nice down block to spring a run at 13:55 in the 3rd.
- Hester gets a good cut back block on a defender at 9:56 in the 4th. Those are the kinds of blocks that are expected of a fullback. Find the defender, wherever he is, and block.
- It is nice to see the Chargers run a little more. The tight ends appear to be up to the task.
Pass Blocking Stats
Team % Blocking
Did the lineman get the job done or not? These grades are good for understanding value for a team and not necessarily for comparing across teams. A game in the 90% is a good score for pass blocking.
Power Blocking
How often did the offensive lineman dominate the block or how often did he get dominated? Each lineman is scored a minus for being dominated, a zero for a draw, or a plus for dominating the block.
Pressures
How often did the offensive lineman give up pressure on the quarterback? Every once and a while a lineman can do his job but give up pressure on the QB. This stat will help glean more info from the line grades.
Combo Help
How often did the offensive coordinator provide help for a tough defender or a struggling lineman. Yea, two lineman ended up with the same grade, but how much help did either of them get?

Pass Blocking Notes
- Randy McMichael does not have a lot of pass protection attempts this week, due to the absence of Antonio Gates. But the ones he does have, are decent.
- At 14:23 in the 3rd, Jacob Hester is called upon to single block Tamba Hali on the pass run. He gets bull rushed and gives up the sack. Not sure if singling Hali with a fullback is the right way to go.
- Mike Tolbert picks up a blitz well at 1:57 in the 1st quarter.
- The rest of the running backs have a few attempts at protection for Philip Rivers and are sporadic with the results.
