BD Film Chargers

The San Diego Chargers come away with a victory in their match-up with the Miami Dolphins.  The Chargers take the lead in the AFC West standings with a 3-1 record. With Antonio Gates out this week against the Dolphins, the back-up tight end Kory Sperry saw more reps.  Sperry had an assignment grade of 88% in the run game with a -0- power score.  A solid day. Let’s take a look at the rest of those scores…

Run Blocking Stats

Team Run Blocking

Did the lineman get the job done or not? These grades are good for understanding value for a team and not necessarily for comparing across teams. A game in the mid 80s to 90% is a decent score.

Power Blocking

How often did the offensive lineman dominate the block or how often did he get dominated? These scores are good for comparing across teams and finding the most dominant lineman in the league.

PB Score

Anything over zero is a good score. The more over zero the more the lineman dominated the defender. Each lineman is scored a minus for being dominated, a zero for a draw, or a plus for dominating the defender.

Team Run Blocking

The number of success over failures for the lineman when blocking linebackers and safeties on the second level. The lineman must be athletic to accomplish a high second level score.

Run Blocking Notes

  • Another good day run blocking for McMichael.  He runs into a hiccup late in the game in which he misses 2 of 3 blocks…but ends the day with an 83%.
  • 10:26 in the 1st quarter, Korry Sperry has a nice down block on a run play.  Nice to see Sperry stepping it up.
  • Randy McMichael shows nice energy and effort on a cross formation pull block.  The defender attacks quickly up field and takes a good angle inside.  McMichael is aggressive and cuts him just in time for the back to slip by the kick-out.
  • McMichael does a very good job in the first half.  Lots of energy and high motor after engagement.  A good example is at 13:50 in the 3rd quarter when Randy puts his defender on the ground.
  • Jacob Hester gets a good lead block on a lead up the middle of the formation.  Good physical contact and good movement after engagement that springs a nice run.  He has another nice lead block at 11:32 in the 4th quarter.
  • This week, the Chargers run a little cluster formation (tight trips) in which they run the ball.  They use McMichael as a pulling blocker across the formation after the snap of the ball.

Pass Blocking Stats

Team % Blocking

Did the lineman get the job done or not? These grades are good for understanding value for a team and not necessarily for comparing across teams. A game in the 90% is a good score for pass blocking.

Power Blocking

How often did the offensive lineman dominate the block or how often did he get dominated? Each lineman is scored a minus for being dominated, a zero for a draw, or a plus for dominating the block.

Pressures

How often did the offensive lineman give up pressure on the quarterback? Every once and a while a lineman can do his job but give up pressure on the QB. This stat will help glean more info from the line grades.

Combo Help

How often did the offensive coordinator provide help for a tough defender or a struggling lineman. Yea, two lineman ended up with the same grade, but how much help did either of them get?

Pass Blocking Notes

  • All the running backs and tight ends do a good job at pass protection this week.  Mike Tolbert gets a couple of reps at pass protection and does very good.
  • Korry Sperry gets some reps in the absence of Antonio Gates.  He has limited reps at pass blocking, but the reps he has are quality.
  • 1:42 in the 1st quarter, Randy McMichael moves his feet well and demonstrates energy while pass blocking.  Good job.
  • McMichael also shows he can communicate with the other lineman when he works in unison to pick up a defensive line loop stunt at 11:56 in the 2nd quarter.
  • At 10:37 in the 4th quarter, McMichael gets hurt and walks off the field.
  • At 4:36 in the 4th quarter, Randy McMichael, from a running back position, picks up the blitz.  He stands close to the QB and lets the linebacker get a full head of steam.  Did a good job but would like to see him step up a little bit more so the quarterback doesn’t sense that pressure.

What unit would you like PFS to start doing film breakdown on next?
