The San Diego Chargers won their season opener against the Minnesota Vikings by a score of 24-17. The offensive line had a pretty good day blocking as they helped support Philip Rivers and company down the field, late in the 4th quarter, for the win. But how did the tight ends and backs do? In this article, we will take a look at how they graded out and in what areas they might be looking to improve for next week’s game. Let’s take a look at those grades…
Run Blocking Stats
Team Run Blocking
Did the lineman get the job done or not? These grades are good for understanding value for a team and not necessarily for comparing across teams. A game in the mid 80s to 90% is a decent score.
Power Blocking
How often did the offensive lineman dominate the block or how often did he get dominated? These scores are good for comparing across teams and finding the most dominant lineman in the league.
PB Score
Anything over zero is a good score. The more over zero the more the lineman dominated the defender. Each lineman is scored a minus for being dominated, a zero for a draw, or a plus for dominating the defender.
Team Run Blocking
The number of success over failures for the lineman when blocking linebackers and safeties on the second level. The lineman must be athletic to accomplish a high second level score.

Run Blocking Notes
- Antonio Gates was used as a blocker in the run game. But as many times as he was used…that is how many times he just ran out into the flats on a fake pattern.
- At 6:06 in the 2nd quarter, Randy McMichael has a poor chip block as help for the left tackle. McMichael didn’t have a very consistent run blocking game against the Vikings. Sometimes, as I have seen him do before, he did fine. But on many other occasions against Minnesota, his defender would get off the block and cause problems. Randy only grades out at 62%…which is poor. Especially, for McMichael.
- Many times, San Diego used Randy McMichael as a pulling tight end. He would come across the formation and many times kick out the end man on the line of scrimmage.
- Jacob Hester had a nice cut back block on the Chargers TD at 10:16 in the 3rd quarter.
- Hester also has a nice block on a draw that springs a big run at 3:20 in the 3rd.
Pass Blocking Stats
Team % Blocking
Did the lineman get the job done or not? These grades are good for understanding value for a team and not necessarily for comparing across teams. A game in the 90% is a good score for pass blocking.
Power Blocking
How often did the offensive lineman dominate the block or how often did he get dominated? Each lineman is scored a minus for being dominated, a zero for a draw, or a plus for dominating the block.
Pressures
How often did the offensive lineman give up pressure on the quarterback? Every once and a while a lineman can do his job but give up pressure on the QB. This stat will help glean more info from the line grades.
Combo Help
How often did the offensive coordinator provide help for a tough defender or a struggling lineman. Yea, two lineman ended up with the same grade, but how much help did either of them get?

Pass Blocking Notes
- Antonio Gates actually stayed in and pass blocked on one play. You won’t see that very often. And he did his job…perfect score.
- At the beginning of the game, Mike Tolbert was standing and waiting for the defender to come to him. Consequently, he was getting lit up and allowing pressure on the quarterback. In the second half…that stopped, and Tolbert started attacking the blitzers and meeting them closer to the line of scrimmage. Nice adjustment.
- Randy McMichael can pass block. He graded out with a 92% and a pass blocking power score of +1. That’s pretty good for a tight end. He just needs to pick up that run blocking score.
- Mike Tolbert misses a cut block on a blitzing linebacker with :13 left in the 2nd quarter. Although, when given a second chance, he gets the job done at 3:00 left in the 4th.
- Jacob Hester has a perfect score because he is not usually in during passing plays. But like Gates…when he was, he made his block. Perfect!
