The San Diego Chargers lost to the New England Patriots by a score of 21-35. The Chargers fell behind early and just couldn’t catch back up. The Chargers are still in first place in the AFC West, tied with the Raiders. Some consolation to Charger fans might be that many consider New England one of the best teams in the league. But, if you are looking to be a Super Bowl team, that might not be a pill you can swallow. Randy McMichael had a little bit better day run blocking this week by getting an 83% assignment grade and a -2 power score. Nothing stellar, but much improved from last week’s 62% assignment score. Let’s take a look at the rest of those grades…
Run Blocking Stats
Team Run Blocking
Did the lineman get the job done or not? These grades are good for understanding value for a team and not necessarily for comparing across teams. A game in the mid 80s to 90% is a decent score.
Power Blocking
How often did the offensive lineman dominate the block or how often did he get dominated? These scores are good for comparing across teams and finding the most dominant lineman in the league.
PB Score
Anything over zero is a good score. The more over zero the more the lineman dominated the defender. Each lineman is scored a minus for being dominated, a zero for a draw, or a plus for dominating the defender.
Team Run Blocking
The number of success over failures for the lineman when blocking linebackers and safeties on the second level. The lineman must be athletic to accomplish a high second level score.

Run Blocking Notes
- Randy McMichael had a little bit better day run blocking this week by getting an 83% assignment grade and a -2 power score. Nothing stellar but much improved from last week’s 62% assignment score.
- Kory Sperry didn’t really have many opportunities to run block. But when he did he did a good job.
- Randy McMichael lined up in the backfield a little bit more this game than against the Broncos. Maybe so he could see the blitzes coming a little better and give some help to the tackles.
- Jacob Hester is a decent blocker. Still not pounding the defender as much as I would like to see him. But a decent job.
- I’d like to see the Chargers run the ball a little bit more than they do. The way San Diego is going…if Rivers is cold, then the Chargers are hurting.
Pass Blocking Stats
Team % Blocking
Did the lineman get the job done or not? These grades are good for understanding value for a team and not necessarily for comparing across teams. A game in the 90% is a good score for pass blocking.
Power Blocking
How often did the offensive lineman dominate the block or how often did he get dominated? Each lineman is scored a minus for being dominated, a zero for a draw, or a plus for dominating the block.
Pressures
How often did the offensive lineman give up pressure on the quarterback? Every once and a while a lineman can do his job but give up pressure on the QB. This stat will help glean more info from the line grades.
Combo Help
How often did the offensive coordinator provide help for a tough defender or a struggling lineman. Yea, two lineman ended up with the same grade, but how much help did either of them get?

Pass Blocking Notes
- Randy McMichael ended the day with a 81% assignment score in pass protection and a -3 power score.
- Sometimes, McMichael gets over matched in pass protection. But he tries to stay with the block. The best use for him in pass protection, appears to be combo blocking, to help out a lineman or be a combination back and tight end on a defender. You can see above that he combo helped 9 times during the Patriots game.
- At 14:58 in the 4th quarter, Randy McMichael has a little trouble with a rushing defender, and Ryan Mathews, who attempts to combo help, gives him little help.
- Jacob Hester did a lot of combo help for Marcus McNeill, this week.
- By the end of the game, the Chargers were keeping McMichael in to help with a tackle or chip, as he released for a check down.
- At 13:14 in the 2nd quarter, both running backs take one blitzer…but the Patriots send two. Missed him…and Rivers gets some pressure.
