Preseason Chargers vs 49ers: Breaking Down The Tight Ends and Fullback

BewsafChargersball

The San Diego Chargers lost to the San Fransisco 49ers 20-17 Thursday night.  Antonio Gates  and Randy McMichael did not play which gave the other tight ends a chance to show their stuff.

Jacob Hester did a decent job blocking from the fullback position.  With limited action he graded out at 98% in run blocking.

Let’s take a look at those numbers…

Run Blocking Stats

Team Run Blocking

Did the lineman get the job done or not? These grades are good for understanding value for a team and not necessarily for comparing across teams. A game in the mid 80s to 90% is a decent score.

Power Blocking

How often did the offensive lineman dominate the block or how often did he get dominated? These scores are good for comparing across teams and finding the most dominant lineman in the league.

PB Score

Anything over zero is a good score. The more over zero the more the lineman dominated the defender. Each lineman is scored a minus for being dominated, a zero for a draw, or a plus for dominating the defender.

Team Run Blocking

The number of success over failures for the lineman when blocking linebackers and safeties on the second level. The lineman must be athletic to accomplish a high second level score.

Run Blocking Notes

  • On the first play for Jacob Hester he lead blocks for the reverse and initially misses his defender but then recovers and cuts him.
  • So far this season the book on Hester is that he isn’t going to light anyone up but he gets the job done most of the time.
  • Frank Summers had a couple of good blocks.  Aggressive to the defender, locked on well, kept the contact.
  • Kory Sperry had a rough day run blocking.  He graded out at 55%, which is poor, and had a -1 on his power blocking score.  Basically Sperry missed his block or was dominated by the defender every other play.  Ahmad Brooks for the 49ers was a big par of those problems.
  • Sperry also needs to keep contact with his defender longer.  Initial contact and then letting the defender go is not good enough.

Pass Blocking Stats

Team % Blocking

Did the lineman get the job done or not? These grades are good for understanding value for a team and not necessarily for comparing across teams. A game in the 90% is a good score for pass blocking.

Power Blocking

How often did the offensive lineman dominate the block or how often did he get dominated? Each lineman is scored a minus for being dominated, a zero for a draw, or a plus for dominating the block.

Pressures

How often did the offensive lineman give up pressure on the quarterback? Every once and a while a lineman can do his job but give up pressure on the QB. This stat will help glean more info from the line grades.

Combo Help

How often did the offensive coordinator provide help for a tough defender or a struggling lineman. Yea, two lineman ended up with the same grade, but how much help did either of them get?

Pass Blocking Notes

  • Jacob Hester doesn’t get any reps in the first half in the area of pass protection.
  • Since Gates and McMichael were out Kory Sperry had some opportunities to show what he could do in pass protection.  He held his own but did give up 1 pressure.  Doesn’t look like he is going to steal McMichaels job but he did a decent job in pass protection.
  • I added Ryan Mathews to the graph above because he gave up big sack when the 0-line and TEs had done their job with the blitz.  But Mathews didn’t handle his man.
