Chiefs vs Lions Week #2: Breaking Down The TEs and Running Backs Film

Bd Film Chiefs

Week #2

The Kansas City Chiefs took on the Detroit Lions, this past Sunday in Detroit.  The Chiefs came out and looked a little more organized and marched down the field on the first drive, due to some good o-line, tight end, and fullback blocking.  But the momentum didn’t last long as the Chiefs fell to the Lions, 3-48.

One thing the Chief fan did find out…LeRon McClain is the best blocking fullback in the AFC West.  At least through 2 regular season games.  McClain not only ran the ball, but ended the day with a +4 power blocking score.  And if you go back and watch the film you just might catch McClain putting some defenders on the ground.

Let’s take a look at those grades…

Run Blocking Stats

Team Run Blocking

Did the lineman get the job done or not? These grades are good for understanding value for a team and not necessarily for comparing across teams. A game in the mid 80s to 90% is a decent score.

Power Blocking

How often did the offensive lineman dominate the block or how often did he get dominated? These scores are good for comparing across teams and finding the most dominant lineman in the league.

PB Score

Anything over zero is a good score. The more over zero the more the lineman dominated the defender. Each lineman is scored a minus for being dominated, a zero for a draw, or a plus for dominating the defender.

Team Run Blocking

The number of success over failures for the lineman when blocking linebackers and safeties on the second level. The lineman must be athletic to accomplish a high second level score.

Run Blocking Notes

  • Two players that caught my eye this week in run blocking was LeRon McClain and Anthony Becht.
  • Becht ended the day with a +4 power blocking score.  When he locked on a man, especially early in the game, he would keep the motor going and drive the defender 3 or 5 yards down field.
  • The Chiefs used Becht in the Lions game just like they used Tony Moeaki in the rushing game in 2010.
  • Leonard Pope ended the day with a -5 power score.  That is not very good.  Although, you might notice that he did have a 84% on assignments accomplished.  The Lions defensive line is stout and was able to power Pope into the backfield and sometimes up and down the line of scrimmage.  However, he was tenacious and stayed engaged with his defender, and most of the time didn’t allow him to make the tackle.
  • One thing about Pope…he is a blocker that stays with his defender until the whistle blows.  Many of the TEs in the AFC West can’t say that.  He may lack a little stoutness…but he makes up for it in his on-field work ethic.
  • LeRon McClain is a pleasure to watch in the run game.  He rams himself up into the hole like a fullback should.  If you like collisions then don’t miss LeRon the next time he blocks.   The Chiefs just might have to find a way to get him in the game more to block when they run.
  • At 8:58 in the 1st quarter, Becht has a nice block, and another at 8:29 in the 2nd.  The guy had a nice motor in the Lions game.
  • Becht drives his man 5 yards down field at 6:28 in the 1st quarter.
  • At 13:07 in the 3rd quarter, McClain puts his man on the ground.
  • At 13:30 in the 2nd, McClain has a nice, quick, fill on a penetrating defender to spring McCluster for a good run.

Pass Blocking Stats

Team % Blocking

Did the lineman get the job done or not? These grades are good for understanding value for a team and not necessarily for comparing across teams. A game in the 90% is a good score for pass blocking.

Power Blocking

How often did the offensive lineman dominate the block or how often did he get dominated? Each lineman is scored a minus for being dominated, a zero for a draw, or a plus for dominating the block.

Pressures

How often did the offensive lineman give up pressure on the quarterback? Every once and a while a lineman can do his job but give up pressure on the QB. This stat will help glean more info from the line grades.

Combo Help

How often did the offensive coordinator provide help for a tough defender or a struggling lineman. Yea, two lineman ended up with the same grade, but how much help did either of them get?

Pass Blocking Notes

  • It was a good day for the tight ends and backs in pass protection.
  • At 9:57 in the 3rd, LeRon McClain puts a pass rusher in the ground.  He even gets power blocks in pass protection.  Ended the day with a +2 dominance score.
  • McClain does miss one pass block at 4:27 in the 4th quarter.
  • Thomas Jones and Jackie Battle contribute in pass protection.  They do a good job but not really called on to pass protect much.
