The Kansas City Chiefs pulled off the Victory over the Minnesota Vikings by a score of 22-17. Jake O’Connell has joined the Chiefs again and finished the day with a 98% assignment grade in run blocking and a 0 power score. Jake didn’t stay in to pass block much, but he did have a couple of reps and had an assignment grade of 50% with a -1 power score. Let’s take a look at the rest of those grades…
Run Blocking Stats
Team Run Blocking
Did the lineman get the job done or not? These grades are good for understanding value for a team and not necessarily for comparing across teams. A game in the mid 80s to 90% is a decent score.
Power Blocking
How often did the offensive lineman dominate the block or how often did he get dominated? These scores are good for comparing across teams and finding the most dominant lineman in the league.
PB Score
Anything over zero is a good score. The more over zero the more the lineman dominated the defender. Each lineman is scored a minus for being dominated, a zero for a draw, or a plus for dominating the defender.
Team Run Blocking
The number of success over failures for the lineman when blocking linebackers and safeties on the second level. The lineman must be athletic to accomplish a high second level score.

Run Blocking Notes
- The Chiefs appeared to being using LeRon McClain in more misdirection against the Vikings. Many plays have him heading in the opposite direction than the ball is going.
- At 9:09 in the 1st quarter, LeRon McClain misses a lead block on the right edge of the formation that results in Jackie Battle getting hit in the backfield. Two weeks ago, McClain had a great game, article here, in which he had an 84% blocking grade and a +4 power score. Since that time, he has looked a little bit more hesitant when leading up into the hole. As if, at times, he is not sure who he will block. To get back those great blocks from week #2, McClain needs to know who he has without leakage from the offensive line getting in his way.
- At :01 in the 1st, Leonard Pope gets linebacker at the 2nd level to spring a nice run.
- Pope isn’t quick enough to get a reach block from the backside on a defender, and the player makes a tackle in the backfield (6:41 in 3rd quarter).
- Jake O’Connell has a good assignment grade in run blocking but has a lot of backside blocking assignments. Those are a little bit easier to handle…but…he has a nice day back, regardless.
Pass Blocking Stats
Team % Blocking
Did the lineman get the job done or not? These grades are good for understanding value for a team and not necessarily for comparing across teams. A game in the 90% is a good score for pass blocking.
Power Blocking
How often did the offensive lineman dominate the block or how often did he get dominated? Each lineman is scored a minus for being dominated, a zero for a draw, or a plus for dominating the block.
Pressures
How often did the offensive lineman give up pressure on the quarterback? Every once and a while a lineman can do his job but give up pressure on the QB. This stat will help glean more info from the line grades.
Combo Help
How often did the offensive coordinator provide help for a tough defender or a struggling lineman. Yea, two lineman ended up with the same grade, but how much help did either of them get?

Pass Blocking Notes
- Pope gets beat 3 times in pass protection. He is asked to take on a rusher by himself, sometimes. The results are mixed.
- Thomas Jones doesn’t have a very good chip block at 7:21 in the 1st quarter. I’ve seen him do better.
- At 6:58 in the 3rd quarter, LeRon McClain ends up taking on a defensive end by himself and does a decent job. Then at 6:41 in the 3rd quarter, he picks up Barry Richardson’s defender that just got by him. Again, does a good job.
- The Chiefs are still doing a lot of slide protections and keeping in the tight end to block. This is common, and the Broncos and Raiders are doing much of the same.
