Preseason Chiefs vs Packers: Breaking Down The O-Line Tape

ChiefsFlimBreakdownBanner

The Kansas City Chiefs lost to the Green Bay Packers 20-19 at Lambeau Field.  Even thought he Chiefs lost the fans of Kansas City can be a little less concerned on whether the Chiefs will be ready for their season opener.

Brandon Albert graded out the highest in the Packers game with a 83%.  Albert improved his cut blocking skills from last week but still needs to get some movement on his block after locking up.  Barry Richardson had the highest run blocking power score for Kansas City with a +2.

Let’s take a look at the rest of those numbers…

Run Blocking Stats

Team Run Blocking

Did the lineman get the job done or not? These grades are good for understanding value for a team and not necessarily for comparing across teams. A game in the mid 80s to 90% is a decent score.

Power Blocking

How often did the offensive lineman dominate the block or how often did he get dominated? These scores are good for comparing across teams and finding the most dominant lineman in the league.

PB Score

Anything over zero is a good score. The more over zero the more the lineman dominated the defender. Each lineman is scored a minus for being dominated, a zero for a draw, or a plus for dominating the defender.

Team Run Blocking

The number of success over failures for the lineman when blocking linebackers and safeties on the second level. The lineman must be athletic to accomplish a high second level score.

Run Blocking Notes

  • Brandon Albert did a little better on his cut blocks this week.
  • Asamoah had an all around good game.  At 1:58 Jon Asamoah locked up with a linebacker on the second level to help spring the running back for a needed 1st down.
  • Rodney Hudson actually had a decent run blocking power score before he moved to center at the beginning of the 3rd quarter.  At center he was facing B.J. Raji on many occasions.  That when Hudson began to get dominated.  But many of the Chiefs were dominated by Raji.
  • Bobby Greenwood really didn’t have many snaps when I was grading.  When he was in for Asamoah, which was only a couple of snaps, he did fine.
  • At 4:12 in the 3rd quarter Jon Asamoah puts his defender on his back.  Can you say “power block”.
  • At 1:26 left in the 2nd quarter Asamoah locks up with his defender on a stretch play and then proceeds to drive him 5 yards down field.  Power Block!
  • At :52 in the 2nd B.J. Raji decides to have his way with Wiegmann.  As usual, it doesn’t matter what happens to Wieg-y…he still makes sure his guy doesn’t make the play (most of the time).
  • 4:57 in the 2nd quarter B.J. Raji puts Hudson on his butt.

Pass Blocking Stats

Team % Blocking

Did the lineman get the job done or not? These grades are good for understanding value for a team and not necessarily for comparing across teams. A game in the 90% is a good score for pass blocking.

Power Blocking

How often did the offensive lineman dominate the block or how often did he get dominated? Each lineman is scored a minus for being dominated, a zero for a draw, or a plus for dominating the block.

Pressures

How often did the offensive lineman give up pressure on the quarterback? Every once and a while a lineman can do his job but give up pressure on the QB. This stat will help glean more info from the line grades.

Combo Help

How often did the offensive coordinator provide help for a tough defender or a struggling lineman. Yea, two lineman ended up with the same grade, but how much help did either of them get?

Pass Blocking Notes

  • At 6:05 in the 1st quarter Asamoah pulls on a play action play and locks up with the defender on the left edge of the formation.  One of the few plays Jon gets beat in pass protection.
  • Chiefs appear to be running different protections that include play action protections.  The first two times they run the play action decoys/protections both lineman that pull get beat in pass protection.  The first was Asamoah and then the very next play Hudson pulls and gives up pressure on the quarterback.
  • at 1:53 in the 1st Branden Albert and Pope have poor communication as a defender splits them on the way to the quarterback.  The Chiefs have to have all these bugs worked out before the first game.
  • At 1:33 in the 1st Barry Richardson holds as his defender is getting away from him.
  • At 13:48 Barry Richardson and Leonard Pope don’t communicate and again the defender splits two Chiefs blockers.
  • Casey Wiegmann and Rodney Hudson are combo pass blocking on B.J. Raji and Raji splits them an sacks the quarterback.
  • Both Asamoah and Gaither pick up a defensive line loop stunt  at 5:01 in the 3rd.
  • Protection starts to get better when Gaither is in at right tackle.  After the Packers pick up on this as well they start blitzing more.

I didn’t get a chance to watch any of the game last night. You mentioned that Gaither was in at RT and pass protection was better with him in the game. How did he look during run blocking on the right side?

    • Bewsaf Bewsaf says:

A lot better than last week. His first couple of plays were bad. But after settling in after about 3 plays he started doing better.

  2. Wells says:

Do you see Gaither taking over for BRich at RT week 1 now? I’d like to think that is what should happen off of what I saw last night, but you’re eye seems much more keen then mine. Is he an upgrade over B Rich? Is he good enough in run blocking?

    • Bewsaf Bewsaf says:

Gaither played a lot better in the run blocking game than last week. Barry Richardson is a decent run blocker…probably better than Gaither. Problem with Barry is that he has been such a liability in pass protection. Something Gaither excels at.

I don’t know what the Chiefs are thinking and I don’t know about Gaither’s health. But Gaither needs to play RT tackle if he is healthy enough to go.

      Just my observations.

nice work, Bewsaf … just as we’ve come to ecpect from you

FYIL on my screen, the last column of stats (Combo Help) is skewed to be
underneath and separate from the rest of the stats … maybe change the width numbers in the stats table in the HTML code? looks like you have limited column space as you need to leave room top to bottom for the sidebar, though …

main thing, of course: great and clear review … should be a fun and interesting year for Chiefs fans

    • Bewsaf Bewsaf says:

I think I might have that fixed.

      • upamtn says:

mmmmmmmm nope, still looks the same to me … not a huge deal … trying to think of what else you could do … widen the tables? there’s 1/4″ of black background on each side so maybe use that space?

again, not a huge deal, and maybe it’s my browser or settings … it’s all good, Bews :-)

  4. upamtn says:

also, will registered users be able to upload icons like your lovely mug? right now I’m just a shadow of my former self ;-)
