The Oakland Raiders lost to the Buffalo Bills 35-38 this past weekend. For the Raiders it was the tail of two halves as the Raiders controlled the game early only to let it slip away in the 4th quarter.
An interesting stat when the Raiders run the ball is that they average -.67 yards per carry when the attempt to run around the right side of the formation. That is bad. But interestingly enough, they average 9.88 yards per carry when running around the left end.
Let’s take a look at those tight end and back scores…
Run Blocking Stats
Team Run Blocking
Did the lineman get the job done or not? These grades are good for understanding value for a team and not necessarily for comparing across teams. A game in the mid 80s to 90% is a decent score.
Power Blocking
How often did the offensive lineman dominate the block or how often did he get dominated? These scores are good for comparing across teams and finding the most dominant lineman in the league.
PB Score
Anything over zero is a good score. The more over zero the more the lineman dominated the defender. Each lineman is scored a minus for being dominated, a zero for a draw, or a plus for dominating the defender.
Team Run Blocking
The number of success over failures for the lineman when blocking linebackers and safeties on the second level. The lineman must be athletic to accomplish a high second level score.

Run Blocking Notes
- Brandon Myers brings his run blocking performance up slightly from week #1. In week #1 his assignment grade was a 72% with a -4 power score. That -4 power score wasn’t very good…and he improved that by having a -2 power score against the Bills.
- at 12:17 in the 1st Brandon Myers gets beat and McFadden gets drilled in the backfield.
- At 3:57 in the 1st quarter the Raiders do a counter play and Marcel Reece blocks no one. Marcel has a tendency to lead up in he hole and not contact any defender. At this point, after 2 weeks, Reece leads all fullbacks with the number of times he leads a play for the running back with the ball and ends up not making contact with anyone.
- Myers has a good backside block at :31 in the 1st quarter to spring a big run.
- 13:38 in the 4th quarter Marcel Reece gets a nice cut block on the edge to allow the running back outside and up the field. Nice!
- At this point Brandon Myers is an on again off again run blocker. At times he does a decent job…then..he will turn around and appear to not have the motor. He did improve from week #1 though.
Pass Blocking Stats
Team % Blocking
Did the lineman get the job done or not? These grades are good for understanding value for a team and not necessarily for comparing across teams. A game in the 90% is a good score for pass blocking.
Power Blocking
How often did the offensive lineman dominate the block or how often did he get dominated? Each lineman is scored a minus for being dominated, a zero for a draw, or a plus for dominating the block.
Pressures
How often did the offensive lineman give up pressure on the quarterback? Every once and a while a lineman can do his job but give up pressure on the QB. This stat will help glean more info from the line grades.
Combo Help
How often did the offensive coordinator provide help for a tough defender or a struggling lineman. Yea, two lineman ended up with the same grade, but how much help did either of them get?

Pass Blocking Notes
- The backs and tight ends did a good job pass blocking this week.
- Brandon Myers had a 98% pass blocking score. That is pretty good for a tight end. And he even has a +1 power score…that is rare to have that for a tight end in pass blocking.
- Marcel Reece makes contact with defenders in the passing game. That is why is score is so high. He didn’t get a lot of chances…but when he did he did well.
- I liked how the Raiders opened up their offense a little bit more in the Bills game. They will need to be more dynamic as the year goes along and it is good to see they are working on that already.
