Raiders vs Jets Week 3: Breaking Down The TEs and Backs Film

Breaking Film Raiders

The Raiders took on the New York Jets at home this past Sunday and looked impressive. This was the first game that Kevin Boss returned to the Raiders and played a number of reps during the game.  He ended the day with an 80% assignment grade and a 0 power score.  Not bad for the first time back, and the Raiders running game will benefit the more he gets on the field. Let’s take a look at those grades…

Run Blocking Stats

Team Run Blocking

Did the lineman get the job done or not? These grades are good for understanding value for a team and not necessarily for comparing across teams. A game in the mid 80s to 90% is a decent score.

Power Blocking

How often did the offensive lineman dominate the block or how often did he get dominated? These scores are good for comparing across teams and finding the most dominant lineman in the league.

PB Score

Anything over zero is a good score. The more over zero the more the lineman dominated the defender. Each lineman is scored a minus for being dominated, a zero for a draw, or a plus for dominating the defender.

Team Run Blocking

The number of success over failures for the lineman when blocking linebackers and safeties on the second level. The lineman must be athletic to accomplish a high second level score.

Run Blocking Notes

  • Brandon Myers starts the day off well, but has a spell when he gets beat in 4 straight plays.
  • Rock Cartwright looked good blocking from the fullback position.
  • Last week, Pro Football Spotlight criticized Marcel Reece and his blocking.  This week, Cartwright took some of his reps and Marcel ended up blocking better when he was in.
  • Marcel Reece gets a nice block on the edge to spring a big run at 12:25 in the 1st quarter.
  • Rock Cartwright has a nice lead block at 11:59 in the 2nd quarter to the right side of the formation.
  • It is nice to see Kevin Boss back for the Raiders.  He sets the edge for a big run at 3:49 in the 2nd quarter.  Brandon Myers did an okay job in Boss’s absence…but Boss just looks better blocking.
  • Brandon Myers doesn’t play as much in the game against the Jets, due to the return of Boss.  Although, he did play a number of reps.  After being out a while he is sent back in at 10:52 in the 4th quarter and shows nice effort on a 2nd level block.  Competition is good!  It motivates players.

Pass Blocking Notes

  • Darren McFadden helps chip a defender to save Jared Veldeer from getting beat on the play.
  • Darren McFadden misses a cut block as a defender rushed in to create pressure on the quarterback. (2:58 in the 1st)
  • McFadden redeemed himself and did save the quarterback from being sacked at :41 in the 2nd quarter, as he picked up the blitz.
  • The Raiders keep a lot of players in for protection when they throw the ball.  They can do that with the speed they have at receiver.
